Joe Satriani（乔·塞奇尼）1957年7月15日出生于纽约长岛，在他过完14岁生日不久，他心中的英雄吉米·汉德克斯去世了。失掉偶像的乔绝 定退出高足球队拿起吉它。自学三年后，乔在长岛地区小有名气，常能教上别人两手。有一天一个身材瘦小的小孩抱着一把琴和一打琴弦出现在乔·塞奇尼的家门口，向他求教，这小孩就是后来成为进步摇滚音乐界一代宗师的吉它手——史蒂夫·范（Steve Vai）。
在日本生活了几年之后，乔·塞奇尼于1978年定居旧金山，并在著名的加州伯克利大学城内的“二手吉他”学校内教吉他。10年之中乔门下高手辈出，戴维·布莱逊、柯克·汉密特、查利·亨特及艾力克斯·斯柯尼克等著名乐手都曾是他的弟子。
在1989年的专辑《蓝色梦中飞行》中，乔一口气录制了18首曲子，并演唱了其中6首，只要听听其中的《我相信》，就可知乔作为一名歌手也功力不凡。
